Benefits of Wearing the Right Size Shoes

People who wear the right size shoes enjoy having the correct body posture and balance, fewer foot pains and problems and lower risk of falling and injuring themselves.

In a Brazilian study, it was found that wearing incorrectly sized shoes was common among 399 adults (60 to 90 years old). Men were prone to wearing ill-fitting shoes. Women who did not wear the correct size shoes reported ankle pain.

In a UK study, the majority of 100 diabetics did not wear shoes of the correct length and width, particularly shoes that were too narrow.

The older the people get, it is imperative to give importance to choosing the right kind and size of shoes in order to avoid injuries. Particularly among diabetic patients, ill-fitting shoes may cause blisters, calluses and pain - worse, it could lead to diabetic foot.

When buying, remember to try on shoes in the later part of the day when feet are at their maximum size. Wear both shoes, as they may be different sizes. Check the inside of shoes for anything that may cause foot injury.
