5 Common Musculoskeletal Issues That Overweight
Matt Sanchez, a physiotherapist and director of rehabilitation and technology at the Aim2Walk Rehabilitation Center, discussed some of the common physical therapy issues that most obese or overweight people encounter.
First on his list are sprains and strains. Though these medical terms are used interchangeably, both refer to different injuries. Strain refers to muscles and tendons while sprain pertains to ligaments. Quite common among overweight or obese people are these sorts of injuries. Most likely, sprains and strains happen because hardly ever used muscles have become de-conditioned to movement and activity. Attempts at strenuous activity could result in such injuries.
Osteoarthritis and Joint Replacement: Excess weight is a factor in osteoarthritis due to the load and pressure on the joints, thus necessitating knee or hip replacement in certain instances. However, this can still be disputed since not all overweight or obese people encounter this musculoskeletal problem.
Disc Herniation: This condition is not necessarily caused by being obese or overweight. However, excess weight bears a close link with the risks of disc herniation—inactivity, weak abdominal muscles and reduced blood flow resulting in poor circulation to the discs in our vertebrae.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Statistics show that 10 percent of the population have carpal tunnel syndrome. However, 25 percent of all obese or overweight individuals experience this condition. Symptoms may manifest as pressure or discomfort on the median nerve.
Rotator Cuff Tendonitis: Symptoms of rotator cuff tendonitis includes pain when lifting or stretching out one’s arms. Reduced physical activity, which results in weak and poorly developed muscles, is the likely culprit for obese or overweight people.
